Trauma and Addiction
Renee Stokes is a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist with extensive experience working with trauma and addiction. She is passionate about helping people heal by aligning and collaborating with her clients in developing a safe space to process, create and initiate new resources in healing from traumatic experiences. Renee encourages reflection and examination of individual and relational patterns in order to support a shift towards greater empowerment and healing. She finds addressing and processing unhealed trauma is essential for symptom relief, long-term recovery and deep healing.
Renee began her training at the Sexual Assault Crisis Agency (SACA) in 2006 in Long Beach, CA where she worked with survivors of sexual abuse and violence, who often also struggled with addiction, codependency, depression and anxiety. Her passion for the intersection between trauma and addiction began at SACA and continued to grow as she expanded into county contracted positions, residential treatment and outpatient treatment facilities within the Los Angeles area. Renee is also fully trained in Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing (EMDR) and is currently working towards full certification through the Institute for Creative Mindfulness under Dr. Stephen Dansiger.
Renee has worked with individuals and families in various settings including treatment (both residential and outpatient), private practice, non-profit, school based and county contracted organizations, including court-mandated clients involved with the Juvenile Dependency Court and foster care. She is sensitive to the complexity trauma brings to an individual’s life experience and enjoys supporting her clients both individually and in a group setting.
