Trauma and Mental Health PHP (Partial Hospitalization Program)

Trauma and Beyond Psychological Center ® is specially equipped to help clients heal from mental health conditions and the trauma that so often lies at the root of these disorders. Our Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP), otherwise known as Day Treatment, is one level of care we offer to those seeking intensive mental health treatment in Los Angeles, and virtually through the state.

“The roots of resilience are to be found in the felt sense of existing in the heart and mind of an empathic, attuned, self-possessed other.” – Diana Fosha

What is Partial Hospitalization (PHP)?

Of the continuum of services we offer, our Partial Hospitalization Program is where you will find the most intensive programming. Our holistic and trauma-informed approach to treatment is delivered through a combination of individual, group, and family therapy as appropriate for each client.

Depending on your needs, you’ll participate in our PHP treatment program 5 days a week, for 4-6 hours a day. Along with our in-office sessions, we offer all groups and individual sessions online so you can now take part in treatment with us from the comfort of your own home. Clients will receive both individual and group therapy daily. We believe this combination is the most beneficial for healing.

Our program is highly customizable and individualized to your needs.

Our Approach to Treatment

What makes us unique is that we take great care in matching you with a primary clinician who is highly trained in the science and art of trauma healing. Our groups are led by clinicians who are experienced in providing trauma-informed therapy and have sought advanced training.

Working from a trauma-informed perspective is how we think about and treat all psychological disorders, and truly all who walk through the door. From this perspective, we assume that underlying most psychological disorders is a history of trauma. Trauma can be a single incident or multiple incidents like neglect, abuse, bullying, abandonment, family mental illness and more. This may have occurred in utero, in childhood, or later on in life, although the effects are deep and just as far-reaching.

With this in mind, we care deeply about the environment that we are creating for those who attend our program. With great intentionality we have cultivated a safe “container” where our clients are free to experience the depth of their emotions and share their story.

Our goal is to guide our clients into a place of safety, where, perhaps for the first time in their life, they can feel at ease both in their own body and with others. It’s from this place that clients can experience more fulfilling relationships and have a greater connection to what brings them joy. Doing this kind of intense work requires multiple avenues of healing through what are called “top-down” and “bottom-up” approaches.

Top-down approaches are more cognitively oriented and target the part of the brain that is responsible for reasoning and logic (the prefrontal cortex). These approaches are helpful in evaluating situations and threats and creating a plan of action.

Examples of top-down approaches include Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Psychodynamic therapy, and more traditional talk therapies. When you are new to mindfulness practice, evidence shows that it too operates as a top-down practice, as it is training you to no longer be controlled by your thoughts. At the same time, a mindfulness practice can bring relaxation to the body for practitioners of all levels.

Conversely, bottom-up approaches focus on the role of the body in healing and bypass the need for language. Here, we create healing in the felt sense, and clients once on-edge, overwhelmed, or disconnected from their body can instead invite a sense of peace to reside within them.

Examples of bottom-up approaches include Somatic experiencing, Sensorimotor Psychotherapy, Art Therapy, Trauma-sensitive yoga, and other interventions that directly target the body and limbic system, or the feeling center of the brain.

PHP Program Structure

This level of care may be appropriate for clients who need an intensive level of care but do not require residential, as an alternative to residential treatment or as aftercare for someone transitioning out of a residential placement or hospitalization.

Before treatment begins, all clients will receive psychological evaluations to determine the best level of care, appropriateness for PHP, and to establish an initial treatment plan. We can provide referrals to transitional or sober living for clients coming from out of town or for those who require extra support. This level of care is appropriate for clients who are acute but not needing hospitalization.

In this comprehensive program, treatment is provided 5 days per week, 4-6 hours per day. This will be a combination of group and individual therapy as determined by your treatment team. Clients will be assigned a primary therapist as well as specialists in modalities that have been chosen for you.

Our team of experts will provide trauma-informed therapies that may include the above-mentioned modalities as well as EMDR, SE, TRM, Sensorimotor, Affect Regulation, and DBT informed therapies, among others.
